My experience is that nothing is ever secure out of the box. Maybe someone can prove me wrong...
How about Novell 3.x/4.x. It was pretty damn tight out of the box...but hey, no one uses Novell anymore anyway. I guess most found it too dificult to setup. It made you THINK about what you wanted to let people do and then grant them the rights to do it. Micro$oft just makes it too easy for most. You only need install it and BOOM, instant server. I say, its easier to grant people access to what they need instead of taking away everything they don't. Just my opinion. Windows Server 2003 seems to be little more secure than Windows XP by default. I have downloaded the fully functional evaluation version from Microsoft and frankly it didn't impress me.
