But there's no alternative way to update Win boxes except
using IE? I.e
an update management server which can be remotely controlled from any
browser or command-line scripts? Or something similar to:
ssh to win box
c:\> update_client check_for_updates
c:\> update_client update_all / update_program1..n

or program those updates into a task scheduler?

Using IE for update tasks looks like a very dumb idea.

Agreed. SUS is Microsoft's solution, especially since WUS has been delayed, which works through Automatic Updates (you
can specify what SUS system to connect your workstations/servers to). There are also products like HFNetChkPro from
Shavlik and UpdateExpert from St. Bernard to handle patch management. In addition, the security patches can be
downloaded and deployed using scripts. In reality, this is how the patch management programs do it. It is not a
requirement to have IE to update patches.
