im pretty entertained by this email. he can get some experience first and then try a to move into the security field and leverage his past, unrelated experience as credential. he can take market rate for his skill set in the security field, and build credibility with experience. or he can decided if being a security geek is more important than being a well compensated one. i dont see how one can command more than market is willing to pay for a service. stranger things have happened. he should prolly just polish up the resume emphasizing any security related experience and keep his fingers crossed. id say with no experience some credential (certification, degree) would be a help. and in the mean time get up to speed on security and make a friend already entrenched in the security field. you may want to have him join this list so he can start asking his own questions and reading those of others. if he figures this out let me know. ive been a sysadmin for 6 years and id like to move into dev while maintaining (or increasing) my current less than 6 figure salary. my .02 -----Original Message----- From: Matt Stern [mailto:sternm () comprehensive com] Sent: Friday, October 29, 2004 8:58 AM To: SECURITY-BASICS () securityfocus com Subject: Security job for IT professional Hello all: I have a friend who has 25 years of general experience in IT, including OS, networks, applications, support, etc., but not security. He is interested in getting into the IT security field and wonders how to best do it, while somehow preserving (or close to) his 6 figure present income. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks. I couldn't think of a way to help. -- Matthew H.
