I like Windows Service packs for this sort of thing.

If you're looking to test effective bandwidth after
compression (client vpn connections for example) logs 
from your favorite packet sniffer are great for
generating text based files.  

If you use the latter just make sure you stop any apps
that might yield sensitive info before you start the
capture :)
