nietsec, 1) Start researching "defense in depth" and "layers of defense". 2) Start learning how to use nmap and nessus and how they can help secure the network. 3) Learn the theory of "secure by default". 4) Get your hands on a couple of extra old computers so you can install, configure and secure your own network so that you can get some hands on experience. 5) Install and IDS on a machine and scan the computer from a remote machine (you can see exactly how IDS' react to port scans and other various attacks. 6) Read forums on security. A good place to start would be www.remote-exploit.org www.phlak.org and www.knoppix-std.com They are all live linux distributions that are aimed towards "auditing". 7) Take classes that are more hands on and not theory. Certified Ethical Hacker is a good one. Kills: (without the aid of reference) -installation, configuration, and securing a network that is good enough to be placed in harms way (hackers) -remotely patch systems (windows, linux, unix, ios) -remotely audit networks and systems (blue team and red team types) -learn to love the command line hope this is what you were looking for.
