I'd second that on the filtering. I use Sygtates firewall (back when it was free) but due to it's age, am planning on upgrading to Kerio. As to 'sniffing,' I use ethereal although I understand it's now called Wireshark. -----Original Message----- From: listbounce () securityfocus com [mailto:listbounce () securityfocus com]On Behalf Of 0xtwentytwo () gmail com Sent: Tuesday, November 28, 2006 3:28 PM To: security-basics () securityfocus com Subject: Re: Home PC Networking First off, if you install a host based firewall such as ZoneAlarm, it will monitor and log everything you just requested. As for blocking, you don't want to block specific ports, always deny things by default when you can (rather than permit by default and block specific things). With a host based firewall set to high, it will drop all traffic by default. Then whenever you have an application such as MSN that tries to communicate over the internet you can set it to prompt you for whether to allow it or not.
