Actually if you use some creativity you can set the password back. Get access to a backup of the hash and then do a offline brute/rainbow attack. Once you have the password then set it back to the previous value. Not exactly 'setting' it back but it is the same end. And if you've lost the password, you can only either reset the password or recover the existing one, not revert back to a previous one.
