Erick, SDM is only a graphical interface to configure and secure the router. All the feature sets are based on the routers IOS not SDM. If you want to use it as a firewall, make sure you have a firewall IOS installed on the router. This IOS is what provides the statefull inspection of traffic. I believe that in the SDM home page you should see the feature sets that the currently loaded IOS supports. If you don't have the features you need, you will need to replace the IOS not the SDM.
