In addition to securing from the outside hacker, do not forget to secure from the hack that comes from within. Though they are in elementary school, kids today are computer savvy. My 10 year old daughter in when 7 received extra credit in school for helping the computer lab teacher teach the other students in the class how to use a PC. Though she has been programming since age 5, GOOGLE "toon+talk", she may be the exception to the rule. If you have any old hardware afoot, which you may, Linux as a gateway router could be an option.
