If you are concerned about people sending bad things to your screen then you should also take a look at syslogd which allows anyone to send a message to all users logged in [...].Why would you want to do that? Then you would hose your session as well, right?
You could protect yourself by telling your comm program to emulate a Hazeltine or something else that doesn't understand the string you're spewing at everyone. You could also protect yourself by not having a session on the target machine at the time.
Any lamer that forgets to say 'mesg n' to protect himself before using syslogd to hose everybody, *deserves* to get hosed himself.
In my experience, syslog messages pay no attention to the mesg setting, so mesg n wouldn't help at all. der Mouse mouse () collatz mcrcim mcgill edu
