For Solaris 2.x, use the file /etc/logindevperm. Mine includes the lines: /dev/console 0600 /dev/mouse:/dev/kbd /dev/console 0600 /dev/sound/* # audio devices /dev/console 0600 /dev/fbs/* # frame buffers
But presumably this only works if you login on /dev/console? If you are using xdm then you will need to edit the Xstartup file to set the owner and permission bits (and you should also reset then - ie. give them back to root - in the Xreset file).
