All you would need to do to prevent detection is cut the send pair on your Ethernet connection.
Bzzt. No link beat. It wouldn't work. Use firewall rules. David. (someone who remembers half-duplex Cisco ethernet interface commands and strange cables and configuration before Cisco released 100Mbit interfaces...)
