Mediaone's external SB1200 modem does /not/ filter broadcast traffic. I've seen broadcasts from *.255 before, as well as packets clearly destined for Mars instead of me. Infact, I would go as far as to say that it's unlikely any cable modem would filter bcast -> that is usually reserved for the ISP's routers. Best advice I can offer you - use a firewall. Cablemodem and xDSL users alike - these people have great access, but they're clueless about systems security. I've seen probes from the "10 net" (10.x.x.x) before, as well as packets with IP addresses clearly forged (somehow I don't think www.whitehouse.gov would run nmap against me..). -- Signal 11, BOFH to the UF list and malign.net "Nazis.
