Known to who? Is it documented anywhere?
Sorry :-) I spend a lot of time in Samba development and I should have clarified that we (SAMBA developmers) have known about it for some time. I assumed it was documented in the KB somewhere. Should have checked. It's kind of like that "conflicting set of credentials" goofy thing when trying to connect to the same CIFS server multiple times using multiple accounts. Part of the "Samba-fu" set of traditional knowledge that gets passed around :)
As it is, all sorts of questions follow from it. What is the window?
30 seconds IIRC (or somethign close to that).
Where does NTFS store the information while the old file doesn't exist? (Is it the change journal? It isn't mentioned.) What happens to Word if someone accidentally or deliberately breaks the mechanism?
This is the functionality Word depends on to be able to save data to a temporary file, delete the original file, and then rename the temp file to the original name and still possess the same change time. It is not a fundemental requirement, because you can edit word files stored on a Samba share (and we don't support thi sticky feature). cheers, jerry --------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.valinux.com/ VA Linux Systems gcarter () valinux com http://www.samba.org/ SAMBA Team jerry () samba org http://www.plainjoe.org/ jerry () plainjoe org --"I never saved anything for the swim back."
