The information in the following Security Bulletin should be acted upon
as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will not be liable for any
consequences to any customer resulting from customer's failure to fully
implement instructions in this Security Bulletin as soon as possible.

ISSUE: The login(1) command allows restricted shell users to
          circumvent security checks.


PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX releases 11.00, 11.11,
          and 10.20.


DAMAGE: Restricted shell users can gain unauthorized access.


SOLUTION: Install the appropriate patch for the HP-UX release:
           11.00 PHCO_24083,
           11.11 PHCO_23900,
           10.20 PHCO_24267.


AVAILABILITY: All patches are available now.

I. Background
     Hewlett-Packard Company has learned of a defect in login which
     allows restricted shell users to execute unauthorized commands
     and possibly break out of the restricted shell.


II. Recommended actions
     Apply the appropriate patch as listed herein:
           11.11 PHCO_23900,
           11.00 PHCO_24083,
           10.20 PHCO_24267.



III. To subscribe to automatically receive future NEW HP Security

A. Background
    Dynamically Loadable Kernel Modules is a feature introduced
    in HP-UX 11.00. A vulnerability was introduced in HP-UX 11.11.
    Installation of the referenced patch is necessary for continued
    secure operation of the HP-UX 11.11 servers.
    HP-UX 11.00 is not vulnerable.

B. Recommended solution
    Retrieve the following patch from itrc.hp.com and apply it
    to your affected systems.

    NOTE: A reboot of the system will be necessary.
