http://www.amazon.com/Harriet-Wolfs-Seventh-Book-Wonders-ebook/dp/B00S5A6HQS/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8 by Julianna Baggott Ok, today's book review is something I would not have expected. Here's the thing: sometimes authors have sweeping beautiful visions and sometimes authors can put words together like magicians and sometimes they can do both. "Harriet" (linked above) is masterfully crafted. I hate this kind of book normally. I swear to god if you've read one coming of age "family has problems but they all get worked out and emotions are involved" book, then you've read them all. I almost failed every English class I've ever taken because to me it's like Europe - I can only see so many old stained glass churches and hypocritical castles and stolid pubs before I'm hopelessly bored and wishing I was in Asia, where something, anything new, is taking root. So I went into Harriet almost with a feeling of dread, because it is exactly that kind of book. But the book is magical. The NYT review <http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/30/books/review/harriet-wolfs-seventh-book-of-wonders-by-julianna-baggott.html?_r=0> of it is highly positive, but for all the wrong reasons. They see the plot and the subject and the characters and frankly all of that is second to her grasp of the language, which writhes through the book like an ice river - honest and unforgiving and beautiful. So in any case, clicky clicky on the above link for your kindle-y goodness. -dave
