Gartner: Financial fraud hit 7.5% of Americans in 2008

http://www.finextra.com/fullstory.asp?id=19715 Around 7.5% of US adults lost money to financial fraud last year, with a string of high profile data breaches the main cause, according to a survey from Gartner. The survey of nearly 5000 US adults shows 14% had their credit card data used, seven per cent their debit card, six per cent said a new account had been opened in their name, five per cent were the victims of money transfer fraud and four percent had cheques forged. A data breach was cited as the reason for the fraud by 19% of victims, with 16% blaming the theft of their wallet and 13% online scams such as phishing.
