The notice is the result of the Aug. 28 theft of a laptop computer from a Halifax Health employee's vehicle in Orange County, hospital officials said. Attempts to retrieve the stolen computer -- which might have contained password-protected patient information -- have not been successful, so notification began this week. "We have no reason to believe that any identity theft has occurred," said Ann Martorano, chief marketing officer for the area's largest health care provider, in a written statement. "However, we are advising patients of the steps they can take to protect themselves from that possibility."
