Police are investigating the theft of personal information from up to
11,000 people, including their social security numbers, names and
addresses, who had applied for furnace rebate programs through the
state Office of Policy and Management.

Authorities have identified the suspect as a temporary employee
assigned to work on the furnace rebate program through a master
contract. The worker was not employed by OPM, a spokesman for the
office said in a statement.

A criminal background check was performed prior to hiring the suspect,
but nothing noteworthy was detected. Police have not released the
suspect's name.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell has ordered OPM to contract with an identity theft
protection agency to provide services for all of those whose
information may have been stolen. The office said it is reaching out
to everyone who may have been affected.
