CT: Social Security Numbers Stolen From Furnace Rebate Applicants

http://www.ctnow.com/news/connecticut/hc-social-security-numbers-stolen-0322,0,7538158.story Police are investigating the theft of personal information from up to 11,000 people, including their social security numbers, names and addresses, who had applied for furnace rebate programs through the state Office of Policy and Management. Authorities have identified the suspect as a temporary employee assigned to work on the furnace rebate program through a master contract. The worker was not employed by OPM, a spokesman for the office said in a statement. A criminal background check was performed prior to hiring the suspect, but nothing noteworthy was detected. Police have not released the suspect's name. Gov. M. Jodi Rell has ordered OPM to contract with an identity theft protection agency to provide services for all of those whose information may have been stolen. The office said it is reaching out to everyone who may have been affected.
