University of Maine officials say hackers compromised the personal information of 4,585 students who received services from the school's counseling center. The center provides students with support and mental health services. UMaine officials say the information on the servers included names, social security numbers and clinical information on every student who sought counseling services from the center between August 8, 2002 and June 21 of this year. At a news conference this afternoon, Dean of Students Robert Dana said there's no indication that the information was viewed or downloaded by anyone, but he says the school is acting according to a "worst case scenario." "Consequently, we're taking very strong -- I might say extremely vigorous -- measures to assist those whose information may have been exposed and to prevent further security breaches," Dana said. Those measures include hiring a company called Debix, which will monitor affected students credit for a year to guard against identify theft. Dana says the school is also taking steps to prevent future security breaches.
