Acer Says Security Breach Released Customers Names, Numbers
By Tim Culpan

June 10 (Bloomberg) -- Acer Inc., the world’s third-largest computer
maker, said a security breach resulted in the release of customers’
information at its Packard Bell unit.

Name, address, phone, e-mail and product serial numbers were released,
while “no credit card or other personal data appears to have been
included,” Acer spokesman Henry Wang said in an e-mailed response to
questions.

While we’re on the security beat, Bloomberg reports that Taiwan-based
computer maker Acer has admitted that a security breach exposed
customers’ names, emails and product serial numbers. No credit-card data
was compromised, said the company, which said the breach involved its
Packard Bell unit. Acer’s America operations are based in San Jose. The
breach was first reported a week ago by the Hacker News, and reportedly
involved the information of 40,000 Acer customers.
