http://www.itechpost.com/articles/16273/20151011/new-zealand-businesses-lose-confidence-in-cyber-security.htm Cyber security is currently a big issue, as many countries over the world have reported cases of the data breach. Even the most well-protected systems in the U.S., Japan and Australia have been infiltrated. Recent studies have shown that costs to resolve cybersecurity issues have also increased by large amounts in several countries. Now, in New Zealand, Kiwi businesses have expressed that their confidence in cyber security has slipped. Radio New Zealand News reported that business advisory firm PwC has conducted a survey among businesses in the country. The survey revealed that the confidence businesses have on cyber security have dropped. The firm's Cyber Practice Leader, Adrian Van Hest, says that while the confidence of enterprises has dropped, it probably shows a picture of real versus perceived risk. Scoop has reported that as opposed to 83 percent of Kiwis who are assured with their cyber security activities last year, currently the figure has fallen to 65 percent. Regarding their organizations 'partners' and suppliers' security activities, 57 percent has expressed confidence. This is a significant drop from last year's 82 percent. But data over the recent years have indicated that high confidence does not necessarily reflect the measures taken by the businesses to secure information. "The reason for this, at least anecdotally, is that some organisations say that no one has told them something is wrong so they choose to believe there is no issue," van Hest said. He further added that some businesses simply trust that their suppliers and partners will be taking the necessary measures once faced with the problems. "There is no magic bullet for effective cyber security. It's a journey towards a culture of security, not a solution in and of itself. It is a path that starts with the right mix of technologies, processes and people skills." Van Hest concludes by saying that businesses which recognize "good cyber security" are "good businesses" and are able to manage issues and subsequently use their information and provide opportunities with confidence.
