How many of you knew that National Security Awareness day is Sunday, October 26th? (I didn't until yesterday.) I am curious if any institutions have any programs or activities scheduled to coincide with this day? More information is available from the Stay Safe Online web site sponsored by the National Cyber Security Alliance at http://www.staysafeonline.info/ The Washington Post also reported yesterday that the Department of Homeland Security and a group of high-tech companies are launching a nationwide media blitz warning customers about how to protect themselves against hackers, viruses and fraudsters online. The consumer education campaign is a key pillar of the Bush administration's cybersecurity strategy. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A7600-2003Oct23.html A couple of weeks ago I posted a notice about a new Security Awareness Initiative of the EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Computer and Network Security Task Force. Several of you have expressed interest in participating or responded with information about your own campus initiatives. If you are attending the annual EDUCAUSE conference we invite you to join us for an Open Meeting of the Security Task Force on Thursday, November 6th, at 12:45 p.m. in Ballroom E. We will report on accomplishments and describe a number of new initiatives, including efforts to improve security awareness and facilitate the sharing of campus outreach materials. We will share a report from that meeting following the conference with members of the Security Discussion Group. There are several sessions at this year's conference that address security awareness: -Track Session on "Security Training and Awareness on a Budget" on Wednesday at 3:50 p.m. - 4:40 p.m. -Poster Sessions on "Awareness Is the Key to Security" and Security Awareness and Defense in Depth: Methods for Expanding Security Strategies to Academic Departments" on Wednesday at 4:55 p.m. - 6:10 p.m. -The EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research will also reveal the results of its comprehensive survey in a session entitled "IT Security: The State of the Practice in Higher Education" which includes findings regarding security awareness on Thursday, 8:10 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. I look forward to seeing many of you in Anaheim and look forward to learning more about your campus security awareness efforts.
