We allow our student unrestricted access to the internet and internet II, our policy is called "Free Love" <http://www.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/erm0266.pdf>, which means that anyone can get an IP address just about anywhere on our campus without registering. We have a system to limit bandwidth abuse both up and down and have developed tools to let us find bot networks and other compromised machines. Our compromised machine policy is that you will be asked to reformat your machine if it is compromised .. after a few times, most students learn all about automatic updates. We do a very heavy educational push about updates, AV (we supply free Symantec to all) and we are asking everyone to install SP2 and make sure that the firewall is turned on. Our capture system lets us take machines off the network by MAC address, which also works on our wireless network. As was said before Good Luck. We've been asked to come up with a proprosal for allowing students to bring their personal laptops on campus and connect to our network. At best we're looking at simply Internet access. At worst we're looking at access to their network drive, printing, and wireless access. Currently, students need to log into a Microsoft domain on a school computer to get their network drive, Internet access, and to print. Do any of you have to provide Internet and/or network access to your students personal computers? How did you go about this? What security issues have you encountered? ********** Participation and subscription information for this EDUCAUSE Discussion Group discussion list can be found at http://www.educause.edu/groups/.
