OK, moments after posting my last message I remembered Peter just one 't' in his surname and I found the note. I had misremembered the details -- it is a standard based system with several (some high profile) vendors. Looks worth investigating. Next time we need to buy another lot of tokens I'll look more closely at OATH. Russell Begin forwarded message:

They're available for as little as $5 in one-off quantities, unlike SecurIDs they never expire (at least as long as they have power), and they're based on an open standard. Oh yes, you can also get OATH-compliant tokens that run as software on phones. The OATH site is at http://www.openauthentication.org/. Peter.
