Interesting. Thanks for this. Kinda ironic isn't it; the most effective sanner comes from a country that has the highest hacking rate in the world haha. Mark Rogowski CISSP, CISM IT Security Technology Solutions Centre University of Winnipeg Ph: (204) 786-9034

We use McAfee Enterprise on our desktops and have been consistently disappointed with its levels of detection. However, Kaspersky has an engine superior to nearly everyone else on the market and both in my use and in testing it's rated to have one of the best detection rates in the industry. We too are at version 8. We've been noticing a steady decline in the effectiveness of the product, and our Desktop group is beginning to get fed up. Trend notifies of infection(s), it just can't do anything about them. So if the garbage is hitting the desktops you can deduce just how effective FortiGate is at stopping it as well. I would be curious to know what Trend is attempting to do to improve things. Perhaps we can chat offline... My question still stands - I would love to hear from sites using McAfee or Kaspersky in-line scanners to know how they are making out. Are you saying that Trendmicro Officescan is having problem with cleaning Malware from machine? If so what version are you running. We are at version 8. We are currently working with Trendmicro on this issue. -----Original Message----- From: The EDUCAUSE Security Constituent Group Listserv [mailto:SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU] On Behalf Of Mark Rogowski Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2009 4:48 PM To: SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU Subject: [SECURITY] BlueCoat with McAfee or Kaspersky Malware Engines We were at a seminar recently where the vendor was pitching the BlueCoat appliance(s) as a potential Anti Malware replacement for our existing FortiGate unit. To date, FortiGate has been letting through more and more "stuff" and Trend OfficeScan on the desktops have had trouble dealing with a lot of it. I know that BlueCoat offers either McAfee or Kaspersky scan engines for malware scanning. I would love to hear from folks running BlueCoat (or said engines on other products) how effective they are.
