We use Mailman and yes it is free. We usually don't use the join or unsub features but assign the members either manually or in a bulk process. The only passwords we use are for the admins. We don't issue passwords automatically to users.

Is it easy for people to join, unsub and manage? As always, if it is easy for the user, it's a bit more complicated for us on the tech end. We are considering using a listserv to replace the multitude of email distribution lists. Also, was it free? (Now a days, that is a major concern in this economy!)
