I meant to bring it to the attention of the EDUCAUSE people that oversee the list. I don't know specifically who that is, but you might try something like security-owner () listserv educause edu. If that doesn't work, Rodney Petersen hangs out here and will graciously forward your complaint to somebody that will followup with the vendor. That said, what David Escalante said is very true. The archives are completely public and the vendor might not even be a list member, just trolling the archive. On the other hand, if you want to post the vendor and sales droid's names, public flogging is certainly an option. I tried to find guidelines for use of this list on the EDUCAUSE site, but wasn't able to do so. I believe that there is such, but I just couldn't find it. - ken Anthony Phillips wrote:
I got the same call, apparently due to my response to Greg's question. I don't mind vendors listening here in case they have something positive to contribute to a conversation, but they definitely should not be making cold sales calls based on information discussed here. Ken, when you say "forward the name of the vendor" do you mean to this list or someplace else? I'm totally fine with subjecting the sales droid to a public flaming for such misuse of this list, just wanted to make sure that is the "proper" procedure before I proceed. Such behavior is not condoned nor appreciated by anyone. And if the name(s) were to become public, would almost certainly do far more harm than good. - ken On 10/21/10 4:05 PM, Greg Schaffer wrote:Thank you everyone for your response; they are much appreciated. On a side note, what wasn't appreciated was that a vendor apparently monitoring this list cold called me about their degausser product, noticing that I had mentioned a need "on line" (note this is the only place I have inquired). I thought there were list rules about such; I guess next time I will need to clarify that I am looking for suggestions/recommendations from higher ed peers, not vendors or resellers (sigh).
