Oh! something I'm working on right now... funny you should ask. I've been
using a lovely piece of Free software called NetSaint.
http://netsaint.linuxbox.com ...

nifty web front-end, alpha-pager (via email), email, syslog, la la la la...
very extensible architecture I think, using plugins and calling external
modules to do other cool stuff not supported in the core system -- ie SNMP
traps if you can write a handler script to do it. Nice documentation even.
Only drawback AFAIC is that it's a BIT on the baroque side when it comes to
configuration. There's a newly added web administration interface, but I
haven't used or seen it yet.

Free! and well worth the trouble.

P.S. FWIW my boss prefers a windows tool called IP Sentry... available
everywhere for cheap... um, www.ipsentry.com I think....

Hi all, a slightly off topic question:

Any recommendations on network monitors to verify smtp, http, and
firewall online status (ping) of various machines. I'm looking for
something that can send a page or an e-mail if there is a problem. Thanks!
