C.K.,
ODBC is not a communications protocol. It relies on an underlying
communications mechanism.
For example:
A client can access a MS SQL-server (using ODBC), via Named
Pipes (yuck :P),
MS RPC or TCP/IP Sockets (default port is 1433).

One other option for MS SQL is "MultiProtocol," the benefit of which is that
it can be encrypted as opposed to cleartext (enforced by the server and/or
client). I'm fairly sure that multi-protocol will run over a pure tcp/ip
connection.
