VeriSign hints at backdown over redirection of error pages

Verisign has finally realized that Web browsers aren't the only kind of
software that make DNS requests. Site Finder appears to be offline now
and the lawyers are beginning to circle.....

VeriSign hints at backdown over redirection of error pages

VeriSign has said it would make "appropriate adjustments" to the changes
it made to domain name service zones that result in most mistyped .com
and .net domain names being redirected to its own site. 

The company made the changes on Monday and has since been at the
receiving end of a great deal of criticism from members of the tech
community. 

Brian O'Shaughnessy, of VeriSign's Corporate Communications division,
said: " In the course of implementation various users asked us to modify
the service to accommodate anti-spam applications. 

"Because VeriSign strongly supports appropriate technical measures
designed to reduce unwanted spam, we are reaching out to users and the
community to make appropriate adjustments to the service." 

VeriSign secures a majority of e-commerce transactions and
communications, and serves as the definitive registry for .com and .net
domain names. It also runs the "A" root server for the global DNS, one
of 13 such root servers.
