Sheepish retraction: was all my fault. The Debian perl maintainer got in contact with me:
... [5.8.4-8sarge5 has] been included in a point release of stable (3.1r3). ... If you have deb http://<mirror>/debian sarge main deb http://security.debian.org/ sarge/updates main ...
and my problem was that I have kept up-to-date on security, but have not updated the "release" part. (I wonder if it was just a coincidence that I got the message a few hours after whingeing on FD...)
