Let's also admit that the term "IT security researcher" or "AV 
researcher" is, in many cases, a farce as well.
"technicians", "engineers", "specialist" would be more adequate but,
except for "engineer" (a protected title in many places) they lack
most of the aura of the "researcher" word.
Introducing that word was probably the first marketing success of the
A-V industry.
