The question that I would ask is how many of those families and/or bank managers are killed anyway after they turn over the bank's vault contents and how many of them are actually set free alive and fairly unharmed? I'm not convinced that this is strictly life imitating art, at least not first. There were several bank robberies where the bank manager/owner/president was taken hostage in his house until the bank opened in the morning. These took place several years back - and there might have been more than "spree" and/or group of villains utilizing this technique.
