Which would be a great story if it was true . . .

Gringo comes from the Spanish word "griego" which means "Greek".  It was 
used in spain to refer to any sea-faring foreigner, or anyone babbling 
in an unintelligible tongue.

Among other problems with the story, the American army didn't wear green 
uniforms in the Mexican American war . . .
