Perhaps that is just a corporate policy at many corporations in the US.
It *is* however corporate policy in many places. It's especially helpful if you're terminating an employee who won't take it well - while you have him in the office, you can have others running around killing access to computer systems, building security systems, and the like, and have security escort the person off the grounds. We've only had 1 or 2 of those cases here in 17-18 years, but it's good to have policy in place in case a well-placed "we wish you'd seek employment elsewhere" hint isn't suitable or sufficient.
