From: http://tinyurl.com/fcovl WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday set a road map for making vacant television airwaves available for other services by early 2009, when broadcasters are due to switch to digital signals. Companies such as computer chipmaker Intel Corp. (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) have been pressing the FCC to make those airwaves available to be used without a license, while broadcasters have expressed concerns about potential interference with their signals. Intel, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and others hope the unlicensed airwaves could be used for a variety of wireless services, including high-speed Internet access, particularly in rural areas where such offerings can be scarce. "Intel believes that the TV white spaces are a prime opportunity for the deployment of valuable new wireless broadband services in rural and other underserved areas, as well as innovative wireless networking solutions in the home and office," said Intel spokeswoman Jennifer Greeson. ---------------------------------- As long as they arent used for ESPN9 or MTV4 I am happy -JP _______________________________________________ privacy mailing list privacy () whitestar linuxbox org http://www.whitestar.linuxbox.org/mailman/listinfo/privacy
