[snip] German prosecutors have tapped in on conversations between a lawyer and journalists in the case of CIA extraordinary rendition victim Khaled al-Masri. According to the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper and Stern news magazine, prosecutors from Munich eavesdropped on talks between Masri's lawyer, Manfred Gnjidic, and reporters from the German weekly magazine Stern and German public broadcaster ZDF. They considered five calls and one text message relevant to the investigation, and argued the move was aimed at finding the kidnappers of Masri, as they could have tried to contact him. But Gnjidic, journalists and opposition politicians are furious about the eavesdropping on the lawyer, calling the move unconstitutional and a threat to civil liberties.
