An interesting car tracking system is being developed at MIT that uses open WiFi access points to get Internet access: http://cartel.csail.mit.edu/ Project Goals: The goal of the CarTel project is to design and deploy a mobile distributed sensor computing system. Applications built on top of this system can collect, process, deliver, and visualize data from sensors located on mobile units such as automobiles. CarTel's design meets three sets of challenges: 1. providing a simple application programming interface 2. handling intermittent and variable network connectivity 3. handling data heterogeneity See project overview <http://cartel.csail.mit.edu/overview.html> , hardware <http://cartel.csail.mit.edu/technology.html> , and software <http://cartel.csail.mit.edu/software.html> pages for more details. _____ In order to upload collected data and download software updates we use miniPCI WiFi card. Our system is capable of using any open wireless network for this purpose. Hence the data collected is uploaded opportunistically during the commute. The picture shows the WiFi card is plugged into the MiniPCI slot of the embedded computer.
