Not sure what kept you so long (isn't this an old thread?) but...I
agree with you completely, sorta.

The checks and balances are found at both the state and the federal
level (they mirror each other). You are a citizen of your state and
the state is a member of the federal union.

The reason states rights were of issue in the civil war - as you
stated they were and were correct in stating it - is that they had
opted out of the federal union, as was their power, and the People's
right.
