DWave Quantum Computing demo

Have been to see the future, or at least a portion thereof, of computing.
(Possibly.)

Attended the DWave demo of their new Orion quantum processor in Vancouver.
(Anybody attend the event in Mountain View? Apparently video clips can already
be found on YouTube.) Not a replacement for digital computing, but adjunct co-
processor, allowing completely new types of applications.

Forget factoring primes of huge numbers: red herring. (Generally, everything you
know about quantum computing is wrong. Not your fault: reported by science
fiction writers who completely misunderstand the technology, and journalists who
understand even less.) Think biometrics, pattern recognition, risk
assessment/management, information flow analysis, possibly secure configuration
management. Also think completely new information integrity problems and the
security issues of radically new architectures.

Pattern identification alone is probably huge in security: think IDS, spam flagging,
new botnet activity tracking, etc.

Sorry if incoherent: my head is still buzzing with a whole bunch of new stuff. Will
probably take a few days to come down to earth.
