Foreign hackers infiltrated the UA's computer network several times in the
last two months, depositing files on numerous servers and workstations in
the libarary, student union and procurement office.

Campus investigators have no evidence of other tampering, but are uncertain
of extent of the hackers' motives. With the infiltration, the attacker or
attackers could have accessed other data, though personal student
information and research-oriented information were not at risk, said
Michele Norin, executive director for Center for Computing and Information
Technology.

The breach was noticed Jan. 2, the first working day after the holiday
break, when a typical process failed to run, raising the red flag. The
first access was in early November and other access was made in December.

In addition to the internal investigation, campus police and the FBI are
conducting a criminal investigation.
