My grandfather's Eastern-European surname got changed to "Smith" at Ellis Island in the 1920's. My wife also lost her unique last name when she married me. ;-) However her first and last name is still a pretty unique combination. BTW, my name isn't particularly identifying. I suspect there are at least 20,000 "Richard Smiths" in the U.S. To identify me specifically one needs some other information such as a birth year and a Zip code.
