Actor Sterling Hayden After two films, the 6-foot-5 Hayden turned from Hollywood to serve his nation as a spy. He ran guns into Yugoslavia and parachuted into Croatia. After the war, he resumed film work, turning from leading roles in Westerns, including "Johnny Guitar," (at left) and detective films to work on movies such as "The Godfather'' and "Dr. Strangelove".
