HDD reliability (Was: Re: Former Seagate engineer: Company destroyed evidence)

Hello,

I have not seen any extraordinary failure rates on any particular brand
of hard disk drive in my department (dozen people, but lots of servers,
notebooks, etc.). So far, good experiences with Hitachi (SAS), Samsung,
Seagate and Western Digital on 3.5" HDDs, and with Hitachi, Samsung,
Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital on 2.5" HDDs. Sample size may be
too small to reveal any trends, though.

Regards,

I always seemed to be faced with the challenge of what kind of
drives to purchase myself or what kind of drive to recommend to a
customer. It usually ends up being Seagate or Western Digital,
typically because of decent price and availability. I have had
mixed success (and failure) with both. Is there a vendor anyone has
had consistent good results from?
