From John Young on the Cryptography mailing list: "THE HAGELIN CIPHER
MACHINE (M-209): Cryptanalysis from Ciphertext Alone", http://cryptome.org/2015/12/ReedsTheHagelinCipherBellLabs1978.pdf. The M-209 cipher is historically significant because it was essentially the first crypt program used on Unix to digest password. In "Password Security: A Case History" (http://cs-www.cs.yale.edu/homes/arvind/cs422/doc/unix-sec.pdf), Morris and Thompson discuss Hagelin's patent for the cipher and being visited by the NSA after their analysis. But I was never able to find the paper online. _______________________________________________ NOTE: As of July 10, the mailing list address HAS CHANGED from @linuxbox.org TO @lists.linuxbox.org.
