different honeypots - different issues

There has been some discussion about the legal issues of honepyots. While no one knows exactly how these issues will work out (there is no precedence) one thing I would like to point out, what applys to one honeypot does not apply to another. When discussing legal issues, people tend to focus on Honeynets. Honeyents are a high-interaction, research honeypots, designed to capture extensive amounts of information. In contrast, low-interaction, production honeypots, such as NetFacade, Specter, or Honeyd only capture small amounts of information, no more then an IDS system. So, when discussing legal issues, you may want to clarify the type of honeypot in question. -- Lance Spitzner http://www.tracking-hackers.com
