HEALTH DATA NETWORK. A consortium of nine insurance companies has
created a new network for processing health information
electronically. The National Electronic Information Corp. currently
allows physicians and hospital personnel to verify insurance coverage
and status, but future plans include filing claims and crediting
payments electronically. The network could handle up to 100 million
transactions annually by 1996. (Wall Street Journal 9/7/93 B4)


CAR RENTAL COMPUTER CHECKS.  A number of car rental companies are now
using electronic links to government computers to check the driving
records of potential renters;  the checks result in turning away up to
10 percent of the people who want to rent cars.  (New York Times
