Imagine it's 1980 and I'm going to pitch my editor at Del Rey Books about a
novel set in the mid-1990s.


I tell him my SF world has no Soviet Union; it fell apart without a major
war. China is a communist state with a capitalist economy. The US is the
world's biggest debtor nation. Washington DC is the murder capital of
America. Germany has become a united nation while Yugoslavia has broken
into little bits. Lech Valesa has become the widely ridiculed president of
a free Poland. The US has recently fought a high-tech war in Iraq that left
its dictator in place and restored a feudal aristocracy to power in Kuwait.


Guess what kind of reaction my editor would have given me.
