When the subject is serious as the Clipper thing is, misdirected humor
doesn't fly well; Shapiro apparently does not realize that writing a
msg with its absence of facial content and verbal intonation of
face-to-face conversation is so very different.  Truthfully I detected
no satire as I read it.  My guess was that this person was a devoted
follower of Denning, or perhaps a one-time grad student who was
offended that people would ping on Dorothy.


So I guess the answer is YES because the net has matured into a
serious communication medium dedicated in part to real world problems.


I assume that you knew a priori what Shapiro was up to?  Fingering him
suggests that he a grad student, not faculty.
